The pharmacology of carisoprodol is not completely understood. Its mechanism of
action perhaps relies on its sedative properties[1] although it has been
observed in animal studies that polysynaptic reflexes may be depressed when
carisoprodol is administered in pharmacologic doses.[2,3] Clinical
investigations of the effectiveness of centrally-acting musculoskeletal
relaxants have been flawed by poor design or inappropriately applied statistical
methods.[4] Some studies have found carisoprodol to be no more effective than
simple analgesics and inferior in efficacy to diazepam.[4] One controlled
blinded study found carisoprodol to be more effective than aspirin in reducing
pain in patients with shoulder or back ailments.[5]
Carisoprodol is the precursor to meprobamate, a strong and addicting sedative
agent which itself was used as a sedative/hypnotic in the 1950's before being
supplanted by the safer benzodiazepine class of anxiolytic drugs.
